Swedish court finds A$AP Rocky guilty of assault for a role in a June street brawl. The court says the 3 defendants are sentenced to “conditional sentences,” which means no prison time in Sweden unless they commit a similar offense in that country.
A$SAP, whose real name is Rakim Mayers told the court that 19-year-old Mustafa Jafari and his friend refused to leave the entourage alone despite several appeals, and claimed they appeared to be under the influence of drugs.
A full-scale brawl ensued shortly afterward and prosecutors allege that Mayers and his bodyguards, David Rispers, Jr. and Bladimir Corniel beat and kicked Jafari while he was on the ground. They said Jafari was hit with parts of or a whole bottle.
A$AP Rocky’s lawyer Slobodan Jovicic said his client was “of course very disappointed” during a press conference following the verdict.
A$AP Rocky will be subject to a probationary period of two years. The court awarded damages of 12,500 Swedish Krona ($1,300) to the victim “for violation of his integrity and pain and suffering.”
The defendants were also ordered to pay fees of 80,610 Swedish Krona (nearly $8,400) for the victim’s lawyer.
U.S. President Donald Trump intervened on behalf of the rapper while he was jailed, and called Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, offering to personally guarantee his bail, but the Swedish leader said he couldn’t interfere in a legal case. Trump later cheered the release of Mayers and his bodyguards.
This International incident drew mainstream attention for the rapper advocating his release from celebrities like Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber, Diddy, and first lady Melania Trump.
