For the first time in the history of Pakistan, the verdict of the court goes against a dictator, former leader Pervez Musharraf was sentenced to death in absentia for treason by a special Pakistani court.
The three-member court ruled 2-1 and sentenced him over a high treason charge that has been pending since 2013.
His actions in 2007 lie at the centre of the treason case against the 76-year-old former ruler. On November 3, the military ruler imposed a “state of emergency”, suspended the constitution and detained senior political leaders and judges.
Gen Musharraf argued the case was politically motivated and that the actions he took in 2007 were agreed by the government and cabinet. But his arguments were turned down by the courts and he was accused of acting illegally.
The 76-year-old is currently in self-exile in Dubai where he has been arguing against the treason charges, brought against him by a former rival, Nawaz Sharif. He’s survived this long let’s see if he can outrun this too.
