After going two years without giving the National Medal of Arts, President Trump is planning to award several, including to “the actor and MAGA enthusiast Jon Voight,” The Atlantic reports, adding that “appears to have ignored” input from the committee.
Trump will award the National Medal of Arts to the actor, who famously said the president is the best the nation has had since Abraham Lincoln.
“Our country is stronger, safer and with more jobs because our president has made his every move correct,” Voight said of Trump’s presidency earlier this year.
In a statement released by the white house Sunday they described why Voight deserves it, “Captivating audiences, he has given us insights into the richness of the human mind and heart.” Say what you want about the actor but one thing is clear he can act and they aren’t forgettable performances either. Just place Mickey Donovan under his credits and that’s enough for me.
President Trump has taken flack for his picks since he apparently bypassed the committee that recommends award recipients to presidents and when the committee members “they saw some as partisan political considerations or a lack of diversity” among Trump’s picks.
