Governor Gavin Newsom signs a law requiring presidential candidates to release tax returns in order to have a name on California ballot. Trump would have to show at least 5 of the last years of his tax returns. Completely aimed at the President.
“This bill is all about equal opportunity and transparency for all, no matter whether you are a Democrat or Republican,” said state Sen. Mike McGuire, D-Healdsburg, who authored the proposal. “Trump is absolutely a strong example of the need for this legislation, but he’s not the only one.”
How the hell is this legal? Trump has out-fundraised all but Biden and Warren and it’s with small donors. Are the politicians afraid of Trump winning California? Newsom’s predecessor vetoed a similar bill in the past because he dubbed it unconstitutional.
Isn’t it ironic that California doesn’t have laws that require current legislatures to show their own tax records? The only exception is the governor. Do that and let’s see how they get rich off of a middle-class salary? The fix is in.
However, with all that being said the bill would also keep several Democratic presidential candidates off the ballot. Biden has only shown his past 3 years, while former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro, Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and venture capitalist Andrew Yang have not yet disclosed their tax information.
Tim Murtaugh, director of communications for Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign, previously told The Bee that “the Constitution is clear on the qualifications for someone to serve as president and states cannot add additional requirements on their own.”
