For years, I had heard people mention A Little BBQ Joint in Independence, Missouri. As someone who appreciates good barbecue and enjoys trying local restaurants, I had built up anticipation for this visit for quite some time.

Last week, I finally had the opportunity to stop in and experience it for myself — unfortunately, the experience left me deeply disappointed.

I ordered the restaurant’s special: a sliced pork sandwich with fries for $12.99. At first glance, the meal appeared promising enough, especially with the hot fries fresh out of the fryer. Sadly, that was where the positives ended.

The sliced pork itself was extremely dry and lacked flavor almost entirely. Good barbecue should be seasoned, tender, and memorable. This sandwich was none of those things. It tasted as though it desperately needed seasoning, moisture, and attention to detail. The bun only added to the problem, coming across stale and dry rather than soft and fresh.

The barbecue sauce was another major letdown. Instead of enhancing the meat, it had an unpleasant flavor that overpowered the sandwich in the worst way. Even the pickle served alongside the meal became limp and unappetizing almost immediately after picking it up.The fries were easily the best part of the meal — crispy, hot, and enjoyable. Unfortunately, they could not save the overall dining experience.

As for the sides, I ordered baked beans and coleslaw. The beans tasted like canned beans that had simply been doctored up with the same disappointing barbecue sauce used on the sandwich. They lacked depth, smokiness, or homemade character. The coleslaw, a vinegar-based version, also failed to impress and did little to balance the heaviness of the meal.

Beyond the food itself, the atmosphere inside the restaurant felt dark and lacking energy. The décor was acceptable for a small barbecue establishment, but the service left much to be desired. The young woman behind the counter did not greet customers warmly or provide much enthusiasm. Ironically, the most welcoming energy in the building came from an older woman who appeared to be bussing tables. Her attitude and work ethic stood out far more than the actual front-counter service.

After anticipating this restaurant for years, I walked away feeling frustrated and underwhelmed. Barbecue is supposed to bring comfort, flavor, warmth, and hospitality. Sadly, this visit delivered very little of any of those qualities.

For me, A Little BBQ Joint was a long-awaited experience that simply did not live up to the hype.
