While I do believe the chiefs will go to the Superbowl this year, the question is can they win it solely on the GREATNESS of Mahomes and the offense alone? NO! Steve Spagnuolo was named defensive coordinator for Kansas City this year, but he is not the right fit for the Chiefs, and really none of Andy Reid’s old personnel have been.
A perfect example was Bob Sutton and look at how that worked out for us. The Chiefs suffered 5 playoff losses because of a horrible defensive coordinator who needed to be fired after the collapse of the Chiefs against Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts the 2nd year.
That year Andy allowed the biggest comeback in NFL playoff history because he and his defense couldn’t hold a lead against the Colts. Chiefs fans know not any of the losses was Alex Smith’s fault, the blame belonged to Sutton, the defense itself and horrible clock management by Andy Reid by the end of that playoff game.
Reid seems to have problems firing his cronies with whom he has a history with, Spagnuolo is no different. The duo worked together in Philly and even have the same agent. Since Spagnuolo has been a defensive coordinator in the NFL his latest history is not good at all.
In 2007 with the Giants, his defense ranked 7th in the league, that cool they won the Superbowl right? Well in 2008 his defense ranked 5th that progress fantastic nothing to be ashamed of for sure. Well, how have his defenses faired being the defensive coordinator in the last decade? When he got the position in 2012 in New Orleans his team ranked dead last at 32nd. When he went back to the Giants for the 2015 and 2017 seasons his teams ranked 32nd and 31st, that’s trash. Only once has he had a top 10 defense in this decade and that’s when the Giants defense came in at 10th best in 2016.
I’ve said it before the NFL is based on what have you done for me lately and I don’t see Spagnuolo delivering with the talent we have and I see him failing. As quick as his career started sadly it will end up being the end of his tenure for Kansas City for the Chiefs. Could Veach be next? Reid? Time will tell.
