A federal grand jury in Virginia has returned a new 18-count indictment against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, it adds 17 counts on top of the single charge he originally faced.
The indictment charges Assange not only with getting classified info but also with publishing it. A DOJ official today rebuffed arguments that they’re targeting a journalist for reporting, saying Assange is “no journalist”, which is complete bull shit. Assange’s attorney Barry Pollack says in an email that the “unprecedented charges” against Assange pose a threat to all journalists.
To all who claim Assange is no journalist please provide a definition as well as who gets to decide.
Press freedom groups say the new charges against Julian Assange are unprecedented, and present a serious threat to journalists going forward, regardless whether Assange himself is considered a journalist or not.
Does the U.S. believe it has the right to have a foreigner arrested and extradited to the U.S. on whatever charges it makes up? Do we rule Britain? France? Germany? Australia? Ecuador? Venezuela? Palestine?Africa? Where does it stop? Is it all truly a conspiracy? The answer just may be in part, yes.
The indictment includes allegations that he aided and abetted former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning’s efforts to leak classified documents to the anti-secrecy group, WikiLeaks. This indictment is also proof that the U.S. government does not need Chelsea Manning’s testimony to prosecute Assange.
If you remember she’s being held in prison for refusing to testify against Assange. The DOJ is simply going to create a spectacle forcing the source to testify against a journalist they despise before trial. So now the question is, will the judge release Chelsea Manning now? They have no use for her now right?
I still believe Assange in the end with his silver bullet still hiding somewhere will flip the switch and play his ace in the hole. If you want to know who my ace in the hole to flip that switch for Assange is, it can only be one man, Edward Snowden. Why? Because out of the big 3 (Assange, Manning) Snowden is the only one who is still “free”. The DOJ wants Snowden bad for releasing documents to WikiLeaks as well.
